San Pedro/Palos Verdes News Today's Tips
After a long and arduous process, Eastview Little League has moved to their NEW Knoll Hill ball fields in March last month - just in time to open the 2008 baseball season.

The move required the intervention of Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn and officials of the Port of Los Angeles - and it raised the ire of a group of San Pedrans that have been usig the hilltop as a dog park for about 6 years.

Now - the dust has just about settled! The dog park has been relocated to a different, albeit smaller, site. It's on a one-acre site at the bottom of the hill. We should be grateful to the Peninsula Dog Park, Inc. (PDPI) for having the vision, class and fortitutude to accept the changes. YOU have shown us that compromise and the fight for the common good can be accomplished in this day and age.

The Port of Los Angeles, which owns Knoll Hill Park, offered the use of it to EVLL for 3 years - or until a complex is developed.

Caltrans is beginning its 2nd Phase in the $2 million landscape beautification project on the land adjacent the Harbor (110) Freeway and the connector route to Highway 47 and Gaffey Street.

For the past month, Caltrans workers have cleared the dead and overgrown brush surrounding the Freeway entrances to San Pedro. Workers are now installing an irrigation system. This 2nd Phase will take about 4-5 weeks, according to Caltrans project manager, Dennis Snyder.

By the end of October, Caltrans hopes to begin planting trees and ground cover.

Target Store Opens in San Pedro!

Posted on: 2007-03-31
Target officially opened at 1701 N. Gaffey Street, the former site of the former Di Carlo's Bakery as well as the ballfields for the Eastview Little League for 40 years.

Occupying almost 127,000 sq.ft., the Store includes a pharmacy and a Starbucks, but no garden sections. L.A. City Councilwoman Janice Hahn said the San Pedro Store will bring revenue and jobs to the area.

'At a time of economic uncertainly, it's reassuring that Target has committed to hiring 75% of new hires from the community', she said.

The store has approximately 225 new employees.

Happy Shopping!!

(A facility for Eastview Little League has been constructed on the Port's Knoll Hill adjacent to the established dog park. )

'Ponte Vista' Project Update - January, 2010

Posted on: 2007-03-31
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation says that Ponte Vista's $8 Million in funding will provide specific traffic improvements to Western Avenue and the Harbor Area that will offset traffic from new residents of Ponte Vista. All Ponte Vista funding for improvements will be provided before construction begins.

For more details on (1) dedicated deceleration turn lanes, (2) traffic mitigation plan, etc. please visit their website.

Brief History and Background:
The most controversial project in San Pedro lies north and west of downtown along Western Avenue and the border of Rancho Palos Verdes. Most everyone in South Shores travels north on Western past the site: the former U.S. Navy housing area that has been sold to Bisno Developers and is being marketed as 'Ponte Vista' (a view of the bridge). As planned by Bisno, the 62 acre site would have 2,300 homes and related amenities. The L.A. Unifies School District also has designated a 15-acre portion of the area as the site of a new senior high school. As promised, Councilwoman Janice Hahn has recently appointed a 13-member advisory committee to prepare a specific plan for the area. The advisory group has representatives from the San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the Northwest San Pedro and Harbor City Neighborhood Councils, local business owners, 3 residents of Rancho Palos Verdes and South Shores Homeowners' Association Boarad Member Jerry Gaines. Jerry also chairs the Western AvenueTask Force. He will report to the Board on a monthly basis on the activities of the Task Force and the Advisory Group - and I will report these updates. Preparation of the Specific Plan will involve numerous public meetings and will take at least a year to complete. Stay tuned!!
